Workshops

2018 April, 7-8, Bette Barnett Steel and Gold-A Love Story

Description of Steel and Gold-A Love Story

Steel is an amazing metal - strong, light weight and malleable. One of the most interesting characteristics of steel is its affinity for gold. Simply put, steel “loves” gold.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to marry steel and gold to create dramatic mixed metals jewelry. We’ll cover how to work with mild (cold rolled) steel and explore the techniques required to create jewelry from steel, including sourcing, cutting, forming, texturing, patinating and finishing.

You’ll learn how to combine steel with gold through torch fusing. The steps include creating gold alloys in preparation for fusing, and each student is required to bring two pennyweight of 24 karat gold casting grains for this purpose. We’ll melt and roll the alloys before learning how to heat fuse the gold to the steel, creating stunning patterns, colors and accents.

Finally, you’ll lean how to apply gold foil to steel using the Keum Boo technique. If you have used Keum Boo with other metals, you’ll be pleased to learn just how well it works with steel and gold.

Participants in this workshop will be required to have a basic metalworking skill set, including sawing, soldering and finishing techniques. In addition, students should come prepared with a well thought out yet simple design concept in mind for a piece of steel and fused gold jewelry. Students will come away from the workshop with the skills necessary to create eye catching steel/gold jewelry.
